Chapter Twelve

Zac wasn’t quite sure how he’d managed to get through the morning without doing himself, or someone else, a serious injury. In the end, Mina hadn’t been able to take him being there anymore.

“Please, Zac, put the knife down and go. Watch TV, read a book, play a game on your computer, do something else until it’s time to go over there, because you are not safe in here.”

Zac wasn’t prepared to argue. He gazed at his quivering hand. Inside, he shook so badly he should have been in pieces scattered around the floor. His heart pounded so loudly he was surprised that he didn’t feel it attempting to burst from his chest. Every one of his nerves tingled, sending tiny shocks all over his body. How he’d managed to produce any food for the guests at breakfast remained a mystery.

“I need to do something,” he pleaded. “I can’t just do nothing.”

“Then go for a walk, or go shopping, or give Jamie and John a ring. Maybe they’ll let you walk the dog with them. You can always discuss their wedding arrangements.”

He kissed her.

“Get off, you idiot, or I’ll cover you in flour. Go on, or you’ll drive me mad. I won’t ask what’s up with you, but I guess it’s something to do with our guest in the cottage. Be careful, Zac, that’s all I’m saying. I think you’re already a little bit in love with him. Whatever you have planned for tonight, try to be, I don’t know, what’s the word I want?”

“Cool?”

“No. Detached, like the house, yes? Give yourself space to step away if you need to. I know your demons all too well, but not his, and I’m guessing he has a few of his own.”

In his heart and mind, Zac knew she was right, but he wanted to get closer to Seth. He wanted him to know Zac was there for him, that they were in whatever this was together. He put a hand on each of Mina’s shoulders. “Have I said thank you enough to you and Chris?” he asked. “Because I’m not sure even if I said it every hour of every day for the rest of my life it would be enough. I wouldn’t have this if it wasn’t for you. You two, Ellis and Kenny helped me get through the bad times and now I want to help him, and yes, help myself as well. But I’ll give Jamie and John a ring and see what they’re doing today. Ti adoro.”

“Ti amo anche io. Now, get out of my kitchen.”
